I have always been fascinated by Indian folk tales as well as children’s stories. These stories have a lot of meaning and when analyzed, these stories open the eyes of the reader. The stories I am referring to are Jatak Kathayee (Tales), Beetal Pachisi, Stories from Panchatantra folk stories of different states of India, and stuff like these. Apart from ethics, one can actually learn the art of managing at the workplace, hence a must for managers, who can learn the art of managing. The blog will explore such stories which will help managers to manage not only themselves but the teams effectively for achieving their own and the organization’s objectives. Some People are very fond of talking in any or every situation, they would like to utter something whether it is important or not, whether the situation warrants this or not, thus putting themselves in trouble. Today's story is about communication Here is a story from Jataka Tales. Once upon a time, there was a king in one of the Himalayan countries, who was very fond of talking and would not allow anyone to talk. No one dared to tell the king that let others have their opinion, which will be in the best interest of the kingdom. He had a very wise advisor who was also not comfortable with the situation. He thought that the king by not allowing anyone to speak is doing harm to his kingdom. He decided to teach the king a lesson. He was looking for an opportunity and soon got the opportunity There lived a tortoise in a Himalayan mountain. The tortoise was very talkative and did not allow any other person to talk or the opportunity to talk. Two young wild ducks called also called Hanjas used to visit the pond to feed themselves and quite often they used to meet the tortoise. The tortoise and the ducks became close friends. One day, these ducks invited their tortoise friend to visit Golden Cave on Mount in the Himalayan country where they lived. The ducks told the tortoise that friend, where we will at the Golden Cave on the mount in the beautiful Himalayan country, is a very beautiful spot. Friend, will you come there with us? The tortoise was delighted, but said, “But How Can I get there?” The ducks replied, we will take you there, you don’t have to worry. What you need to do is to hold your tongue, and catch a stick with your teeth. But you will not open your mouth and say anything to anyone. He replied I can do that. Take me with you. The ducks said, then let us go. They bought a stick and made the tortoise bite and hold the stick in the center with his teeth and they themselves took the two ends of the stick in their teeth and flew up in the air. Some villagers seeing the tortoise being carried by ducks, called out, “Two hanjas are carrying a tortoise along on a stick”. The tortoise wanted to say something as was his habit immediately opened his mouth to say, ducks are my friends and they choose to carry me, who are you wrenched, slaves. While the ducks were flying, they were over the king’s palace. The moment the tortoise opened his mouth, he fell into the open courtyard and there was a thud and a cry that the tortoise has fallen into the courtyard dead and split into two. The king and his minister on hearing the cry came out with his courtiers and the advisor and saw the tortoise dead, split into two. Kindly asked the minister, what would have happened that caused the death of the poor tortoise. The advisor thought for a couple of minutes, and smiled as got an opportunity to admonish the kind, told the king: This tortoise must have made friends with some wild ducks who would have told him to hold the stick and hold his tongue even if he hears anyone else talking. He would have heard something, wanting to say something, and let the stick go and must have fallen down from the sky and thus lost his life. These people are called chatterboxes –people whose words have no end –who come to grief like this. The tortoise killed himself while uttering his voice, though he was holding the tight stick as per the promise made by him to Hanjas. The story which has been referred to is from Kacchapa Jataka titled” The talkative tortoise” and has a message for those managers/people who do not stop talking and don’t adhere to others' advice despite promising to do so when given ( In this case, tortoise, when advised not to utter any word while he was being carried by Hanjas, said “ I can do”) always get into trouble. When you don't listen to others, you miss out on gaining something. There is always something one can learn from everyone you interact with but only when you're listening. We never know, people might have insights to offer that one can't see and know unless one listens Managers need to be very careful while communicating. Allow people/group members to express their opinions. Once the opinion is given by some team members, see the merits of the opinion, and if found it has merit, implement it. Though the story is old, it delivers a powerful message.

Story No. 5 – Lessons for Managers-“Action Without Due Consideration” (Adapted from Panchatantra) The story begins with a verse: “No wise man should follow the barber's example— Pursuing what he has neither accurately observed, Nor properly understood, neither correctly heard, Nor sufficiently considered.” Long ago, a merchant named Manibhadra lived in the ancient town of Pataliputra. He was known for his regular charitable acts. He never refused to give alms and help the needy. Despite his generous deeds, fate had been unkind to him. Over a period of time, he lost all his wealth and was left penniless and dejected. He was slowly stripped of his respect and reputation. Consumed by thoughts of his downfall, Manibhadra decided to end his life by starvation. One night, as he lay asleep, he had a dream. In it, a monk who looked like a Jain Monk appeared and said: “O Merchant, do not despair. I am Padmanidhi, (Padmanidhi, in Hindu tradition, is one of the nine treasures of Kubera, the god of wealth), a treasure accumulated by the good deeds of your ancestors and granted by your ancestors. Tomorrow morning, I will come to your house in this very form. Strike me on the head with a stick, and I shall turn into gold. You will have so much gold that it will never be exhausted.” The next morning, Manibhadra awoke, confused, dizzy and shaken. The memory of the dream haunted him. He thought to himself, “Can such a dream come true or is it simply my mind, obsessed with thoughts of wealth?” Coincidentally, that morning, a barber had come to paint his wife’s nails. While the barber was busy, the very saint from the dream appeared at the door. Manibhadra instantly recognized him. With some hesitation, he picked up a small stick and lightly struck the monk on the head—and to his disbelief, the saint turned into a heap of gold. Overjoyed, the merchant stored the gold safely and gave a generous tip to the barber, asking him not to speak of the incident to anyone or otherwise the matter will go to king and he will be in trouble. The barber promised to keep the matter confidential. However, curiosity and greed soon got the better of the barber. He thought, “If all Jain monks turn into gold when hit on the head, I must invite a few to my house!” He spent a restless night planning. The next morning, he went to the Jain monastery. After paying respects to the senior monks, he humbly requested the chief monk: “Respected Muni, I request you to come to my home for alms today, and please bring other monks with you.” The chief monk replied : “Son, as monks, we follow a sacred rule. We accept food only from the first devotee we encounter each day, and eat only enough to survive. Please do not insist.” But the barber was persistent. He even tried to offer him alms. He was admonished by the chief monk and advised not to repeat the act.. After several failed attempts, he left, disappointed. Still determined, after reaching his home, he placed a wooden stick behind his front door, then returned to the monastery at lunchtime and again requested the monks to come home for prayer. This time, a few monks agreed. As soon as they entered his house, the barber locked the doors and began striking them on the head with the stick. Some monks fell dead, others were severely injured, and the rest began screaming for help. The town's chief watchman heard the commotion and sent his men to investigate. When they arrived, they found bleeding monks rushing out of the barber's house. Shocked, the guards asked what had happened. The monks explained everything, and the barber was immediately arrested and brought before the court. In court, the judges questioned him: “Why did you commit this heinous act?” The barber replied, “It’s not my fault. I saw the merchant do the same thing—and gold appeared. I only followed what I saw.” The court summoned the merchant. He explained his dream and the incident truthfully. After hearing both sides, the judges pronounced their verdict: The merchant was set free, as he had not harmed any real person and had acted on a dream. The barber was sentenced to death, for murdering innocent monks based on a misunderstanding of facts and imitation. Lessons from this story Misunderstood Success Can Be Dangerous · Lesson: Success or outcomes in others’ lives may be based on unknown/unique factors (like the merchant’s dream). Trying to replicate results without understanding the full story can lead to failure or harm. · Application: In management, never replicate a strategy just because it worked elsewhere. Analyse the context and hidden variables. What works in one context may not work in another. Superficial Observation v/s Deep Understanding · Lesson: The barber saw an action but didn’t grasp the intention, cause, or context behind it. · Application: Managers must ask why before copying a “best practice.” True understanding comes from inquiry, not surface observation. · Understand before acting. Simply observing others is not enough—think, analyse, and only then take action. Half/incomplete Knowledge is Risky · Lesson: The merchant did not fully explain the situation /experience to the barber, and the barber assumed that he knew everything. · Application: In leadership, half or incomplete knowledge can create confusion. Managers must ensure clear and complete communication, especially when others might act on it. Greed Clouds Judgment · Lesson: The barber’s greed overwhelmed his reasoning. Instead of seeking understanding, he jumped to action driven by desire. · Application: Decision-making clouded by greed or urgency often leads to reckless outcomes—whether in business investments or daily leadership. · Haste leads to disaster. Acting without reflection can lead to consequences as severe as those faced by the barber. Ethics and Dharma Must Guide Action · Lesson: The merchant harmed no one. The barber still committed a grave adharmic act due to ignorance. · Application: Even with good intentions, if your actions violate dharma (ethics), the consequences will follow. Yukti (strategy) must be rooted in dharma.

Why Candidates get rejected It is common the find that you are many a times rejected despite the fact that you have right credentials/ experience? You feel disappointed and dejected, when you find that the person next to you is no better than you. Either he/she is equal to you or less experienced and qualified than you, though your Bio-data gets shortlisted. Merely getting your bio shortlisted does not ensure that you get selected. Why? Have you ever thought about it? May be Yes. May be No? This is the time, you must do some sort of analysis to find out the reason. Have you ever considered the following before applying for any job? Is this job really for you? Is the company really looking for the kind of experience you have or something else? What is the salary level offered and your expectations? What level of expertise organization is looking for and what are you offering in terms of expertise? If selected, what is the timeline within which you can join the new organization? You might have included those skills which actually you don’t have, or might have taken support from AI tool to frame your bio and forwarded your bio without rechecking. Companies may not consider you: If it is a niche skill, the process is stringent. There is emphasis on Quality than Quantity. Some times during bulk hiring, the bio may be shortlisted and candidate may be called for interview, but during interaction, the hiring manager may find a better candidate, in terms of skills. During first few minutes of your interaction with hiring team, you may have acted in a fashion, which may not have been liked by the team, even though, it may not have been intentional. Next time when you are applying for any job, ensure, you have complete details of the job, the organization and its culture.

Have you ever thought about what happens when you choose not to make a decision—whether in your personal life or professional matters? Decision-making is perhaps one of the toughest responsibilities anyone faces, especially when it comes to making the right choice. Everyone desires to make the right decision, succeed, and be remembered as a hero. Yet, many people hesitate to decide. The reasons vary: Fear of failure, leading to postponement or complete avoidance of decisions, hoping time will resolve the issue. Fear of making the wrong choices. A naturally indecisive temperament. Lack of authority to take decisions. Loyalty towards a person and not an organization/institution/country And many other personal or situational factors. Ultimately, whether a decision is right or wrong depends on the outcome—or how others perceive it. But there is a deeper truth: when you choose not to decide, you have, in fact, already made a decision—to remain inactive. And in such cases, someone else will step in and decide on your behalf. Here is a powerful story taken from Mahabharata centered on Bhishm Pitamaha’s inaction /in-decision Bhishma, the revered patriarch of Hastinapur, had bound himself by a vow: to protect the throne of Hastinapur at all costs, treating whoever sat on it as his father’s reflection. This oath of loyalty towards the throne clashed with his awareness of the injustices being committed by the Kauravas against the Pandavas ultimately resulting in their banishment from Hastinapur for 13 years. Bound by his vow, Bhishma refrained from taking a stand against King Dhritarashtra and his son Duryodhana, even though he knew their actions were unjust and destructive. When all signs pointed towards an impending war, Bhishma remained silent. Even Lord Krishna attempted to prevent the conflict—first warning the assembly in King Virat’s court; Draupadi, who had taken a vow not to forgive Kauravas until their destruction as she was humiliated by Duryodana, Dushasana, Karn and Shakuni when Pandavas lost in gambling through cheating .Lord Krishna tried to prevent the war and as a last resort personally going as an emissary to negotiate peace by asking only for five villages for the Pandavas. But Duryodhana rejected this, and war became inevitable. Had Bhishma taken a firm decision, perhaps the catastrophic war of Mahabharata could have been avoided. In his silence and inaction, the responsibility of decision-making shifted to Duryodhana, Shakuni, Karna, and Dushasana—whose choices led to the destruction of countless great warriors and the annihilation of the Kauravas clan itself. The lesson is clear: indecision is not escape—it is surrender. By avoiding decisions, you give away your power to others, often with irreversible consequences. Lessons for Managers from this story Indecision is the worst decision: By your inaction/ not taking decisions, you unconsciously allow others who may not have the right intentions or vision to take charge of the situation. In organizations, if a manager delays or avoids decisions, someone else will fill the vacuum—often in ways that harm the team or company. Delayed action/inaction can escalate crises: The war could perhaps have been avoided if Bhishma had intervened early. Managers who delay decisions /or are indecisive often see small issues grow into major crises, costing time, morale, and resources. Decision-making creates leadership legacy: Bhishma is remembered with reverence but is also criticized for his silence which resulted in war and total annihilation of Kauravas. A manager’s legacy is defined not only by the decisions they made but also by the decisions they avoided. Moral courage is a critical leadership trait: Even great knowledge is futile without courage to act. Managers must cultivate moral courage to stand for what is right, even if it is unpopular. Loyalty should be to principles, not to individuals: Bhishma’s loyalty to the throne outweighed his responsibility toward Hastinapur and its people. Managers too must prioritize organizational values and ethics over blind loyalty to a boss, colleague, or faction.
